For quite a while, debate continues as to whether there are any health benefits from drinking coffee. There are a selection of studies which claim to prove that drinking more than a specific amount of coffee causes high blood pressure, heart disease and even ulcers. Then again, there have been nearly as many research results that prove that there are health benefits which come from drinking coffee. For the purposes of this article, we want to look at the idea of coffee as a health drink.

Recent medical findings have indicated that daily coffee drinking lowers the risk of Parkinson's disease, diabetes and even lowers the risk of contracting colorectal cancer.

It would appear that it is the high caffeine content of coffee which is responsible for these beneficial results. The progress of Parkinson's disease has been found out to be directly related to to the ingestion of caffeine. The more caffeine consumed, the lower the risk of developing the disease and the same results have been found for type 2 diabetes. Caffeine in small quantities has been proved by studies carried out at the University of Bristol to influence our cognisance and humour as well as increasing alertness and efficientcy of carrying out tasks thus increasing productiveness particularly in the workplace.

As more studies are conducted, the more they conclusive they become that drinking two cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of development colorectal cancer by as much as twenty-five percent. In addition an eighty percent reduction in the risk of getting cirrhosis of the liver was noticed in people who drink at least two cups of coffee each day. In these instances, it appears to be the antioxidants contained in coffee beans which are responsible for the lessening of the probability of developing the diseases because the cell growth is controlled. These antioxidants have also been found to be sources of chlorogenic acid which lowers concentrations of glucose in the body.

Notwithstanding the above, the most important element in all these studies is the actual quantity of coffee consumed by an individual. They all seem to say that drinking two cups of coffee a day is good but that very much more than that is bad because of the addictive properties of caffeine as well as the stimulant effects which can cause a raised heart rate and high blood pressure to name but two.

So enjoy your two daily cups of coffee as a health drink but remember that more is quite the opposite.
