We all know that it's important to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and that our bodies need around eight hours of sleep a night, but not many people realise that drinking coffee is also good for you because it contains antioxidants.

This was found when research workers carried out further investigations to see if there are any effects from coffee drinking apart from enhanced alertness. Studies concluded that drinking two or three cups of coffee daily can prevent a variety of diseases such as Parkinson's disease, depression and dental cavities.

Another study shows that the antioxidants contained in coffee are more effective than those coming from fruits and vegetables. This is because not all of the nutrients here have already been used up protecting the individual from diseases.

Aside from coffee, other substances that also contains caffeine, which can help boost the immune system, are tea and chocolate. Red wine or beer is also helpful but these must be consumed in moderation.

Green coffee beans for example have something inside called chlorogenic acid. This is an antioxidant that helps regulate the digestive system and makes the body absorb oxygen much better than other liquids.

Regular black coffee on the other hand has caffeic acid, melanoidins and N-methylpyridinium.

There are people who drink coffee with cream, milk or sugar. Even if one or all three are mixed with coffee, the level of antioxidants remains the same so people can still reap the benefits of drinking it.

So, the next time you go to a caf and decide to get a drink, chances are coffee will be ordered instead of a cup of tea. You will just have to choose from the different variants now available which could be either hot or cold.

Recent studies have come to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with drinking more than three cups of coffee daily. Some people are able to do it while others can't and the best thing realise when you have drunk enough coffee. The signs you should look for are rapid heart beat, dry mouth and shaking hands, all of which can be caused by overdoing the coffee intake. After all, there is always tomorrow and it isn't that difficult to brew up a new batch.

We're not trying to say that coffee is the only nutrient you need; it certainly isn't, so stick with that fruit and veg, a good night's sleep and plenty of exercise for all round good health so that you can enjoy your few cups of coffee a day.

Pregnant women and those suffering from heart disease or raised blood pressure should consult their doctor before drinking coffee or anything else containing caffeine (e.g. tea or cola). Young children may also be affected by caffeine which could make them restless or even hyperactive.
